Frederick Adolphus Sawyer (December 12, 1822 – July 31, 1891) was a United States senator from South Carolina. Born in Bolton, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard University in 1844 and taught school in New England until 1859, when he took charge of the state's normal school in Charleston, South Carolina. He returned to the North during the Civil War but came back to Charleston in February 1865 to support Reconstruction measures. Sawyer witnessed the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865. He was appointed collector of internal revenue for South Carolina's second district in 1865, and after the state's readmission to the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving from July 16, 1868, to March 4, 1873. In the Senate, he chaired the Committee on Education during the Forty-first Congress and was a member of the Committee on Education and Labor in the Forty-second Congress.

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was a prominent Union general during the American Civil War, renowned for his command of military strategy and his implementation of total war tactics during his famous "March to the Sea." After the war, Sherman served as Commanding General of the Army from 1869 to 1883.
