Charles Mayer Sonnenberg (1842-1912) immigrated to the United States from Germany at the age of sixteen. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 70th NY Infantry under Daniel Sickles, but was later discharged for disability on November 26, 1862.

At the start of the war in 1861, Daniel Sickles (1819-1914) became one of the Union's most prominent political generals, recruiting the New York regiments that became known as the Excelsior Brigade in the Army of the Potomac. The four regiments raised by Sickles that comprised the first Excelsior Brigade were the 70th, 72nd, 73rd, and 74th New York Infantries. Despite his lack of military experience, he served as a brigade, division, and corps commander in some of the early Eastern campaigns. In March 1862 however, Sickles was forced to relinquish command when Congress refused to confirm his commission. Nevertheless, he worked diligently to lobby among his Washington political contacts, reclaiming both his rank and command in time to rejoin the Army in the Peninsula Campaign.
