Samuel Clemens ALS to English Publisher Re: Italian Translations
ALS
Handwritten letter signed "S.L. Clemens" to Andrew Chatto of Chatto and Windus Publishers, the author's publishing house in England. 1p, measuring 5.5" x 8.25", Hartford, [CT], dated March 19, 1890. Within, Clemens refers Chatto to an Italian translator who is interested in publishing the works of Mark Twain in Italy, but tells him not give him the rights to anything before "The Gilded Age" (1873). Uneven edge toning and creasing present, with archival mount tape on left edge of verso; few light spots. Otherwise, very good with interesting contents!

In full:

"Mr. Romasso has made translations of some of my sketches, and wishes to publish them in Italy, but I necessarily refer him to you, because the authority to grant or withhold permission rests solely on you. But in any case, do send him your editions of my several books & charge to my account, for I would rather he should read my modern works than my ancient ones. Don't send him anything earlier than 'The Gilded Age'. The sketches which he mentions to me are heavy antiquities, & I had forgotten that they existed."

"The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" was a novel co-written in 1873 by Twain and Charles Dudley Warner which satirized greed and political corruption in post-Civil War America. While it is not one of his best-known works, the novel is notable as the only book Twain wrote with a collaborator and for its title, which gave the period in U.S. history its name. In telling Chatto to exclude his earlier "ancient" works, Clemens would have left out "The Innocents Abroad" (1869), "Roughing It" (1872), and short stories such as "Advice For Little Girls" (1867) and "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" (1867).
