Reginald A. Caton Archive of ALS & TLS (26) Includes J. M. Barrie, H. G. Wells & Frank Harris, Ex-Forbes
Archive
A large group of correspondence between English publisher Reginald A. Caton and various authors, including J.M. Barrie, H.G. Wells, Alfred Douglas, and Frank Harris. The group is made up of approximately 26 handwritten or typed letters signed and addressed to Caton, dating from the early to mid-1900s. Also included are some printed materials published by the authors. All of the letters have expected wear, soiling, toning, or flattened folds. Minor separations at a few folds. All boldly signed. Please review the photographs for further condition information. We've done our best, but there could be secretarial or facsimile signatures found within this sizable collection. Ex. Collection of Steve Forbes.

Highlights from the archive:
1. H.G. Wells ALS "H.G. Wells", Sandgate, dated October 1, 1907: "Very many thanks indeed for the Annals of the West Kent Club, which I am returning herewith. I read it with very great interest & pleasure."

2. J. M. Barrie ALS "J. M. Barrie", London, dated May 3, 1900: "I shd be delighted to send in a copy of the little cricket book if I had any, but there are none. There were only a handful printed for the members…I remember you well, particularly this third visit to Derby when we sat under the shadow of Sir William and I thank you heartily for 'The Real Football' which I look forward to reading with much pleasure…"

3. Hall Caine ALS "Hall Caine", Isle of Man, n.d., addressed to Mr. Webb: "Many thanks for sending me the Proof. I think the closing paragraph should be set in the black type & cut off from the summary which is signed as like my own name."

4. Hesketh Prichard ALS "Hesketh Prichard", London, n.d.: "Many thanks for your letter, which I suppose must have been mislaid in the pavilion. I am afraid I have too much work in hand to undertake any more just now - thanks all the same. I have two or three contracts which need immediate attention."

5. Frank Harris ALS "Frank Harris", France, dated January 1, 1925: "My dear Caton; I want James Joyce's 'Portrait of the Young Mans Artist' I think that's the title as soon as I can get it. I wrote yesterday agreeing to your wishes as to price. I'm really sending this in a hurry for I want the book badly. It's cheap I believe but I can't give you the published - alas! Though I've no doubt you'll find it in 2 minutes…"

6. Edward Henry Blakeney ALS "EHB", Winchester, July 30, n.y.: "Dear Sirs - I am pleased you like the idea of 'Scipio's Dream', and I shall set about it as soon as I return from abroad at end of Augt. I could do the job quickly, but a book such as we envisage ought to be done with rather special care, so I shall spend extra time over it. I have suggestions as regards somewhat longer translations from the Classics; but these can be kept back till I can consult others; I will then call on you and tell you the result of our cogitation. One wants to lay hold of something a little out of the common. Thanks for mentioning the matter to me."
