George Wray (1728-1804) was born in England in 1728, and settled in New York during the French and Indian War. In 1772, he was clerk of stores for the Royal Regiment of Artillery, stationed at New York. He followed the British Army to Boston in 1774, and in December 1775, he became commissary of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, in which capacity he assumed control of issuing and receiving all stores for the artillery.

The 3rd Regiment of Foot received its nickname of "The Buffs" because it had been issued with buff coats when it first served abroad in the Low Countries. It was later given buff-colored uniform facings (collar, lapels and cuffs) and waistcoats to distinguish itself from those of other regiments. The Buffs was one of the first infantry regiments in the British Army. With origins dating back to 1572, it took part in many campaigns in the years that followed. In 1778, the regiment had been on service in Ireland for several years, and by the end of 1780, the regiment had received orders for America. The 3rd Foot arrived in Charleston, South Carolina in March 1781.
