Abraham Lincoln
Hartford, CT, ca. 1860/61
Beardless Abraham Lincoln Hand-Colored Kellogg Lithograph Used During 1860 Convention & Campaign
Art
A hand-colored lithograph of future 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 10" x 13" on board and printed by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg, Hartford, Connecticut. N.d. but ca. 1860/1861. The printed caption below reads: "Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States." Also printed "E.B. & E.C. Kellogg, 245 Main St. Hartford, Conn." at lower left, and "Geo. Whiting, 87 Fulton St, New York" at lower right. With expected wear including minor to moderate toning and isolated stains mostly, affecting the margins.

This handsome lithograph depicts a beardless, youthful Lincoln seated at a table strewn with books, manuscript in hand. It was first circulated as a campaign poster during the Republican Convention of 1860, and later during the presidential election. Currier & Ives, rivals to the Kellogg print-making dynasty, also released a similar version. Differences between these prints are mainly relegated to details, such as the background curtain color, the armchair decoration, and what Lincoln is shown holding in his hands, usually either papers or books to signify his industry and knowledge.

Edmund Burke Kellogg (1809-1872) and Elijah Chapman Kellogg (1811-1881) were the brothers of Daniel Wright Kellogg (1807-1874). Daniel established and operated a lithography studio in Hartford, Connecticut from 1830-1840. When Daniel migrated to the Midwest in 1836, his younger brothers E.B. and E.C. took over the firm. The company was known as E.B. & E.C. Kellogg for the majority of the period between 1842-1867. George Whiting (1820-1862) served as a clerk at the company's New York office agent and, finally, owner.
