Abraham Lincoln Funeral Notice
Document
Funeral Notice, 1p on bifold black-bordered mourning stationery, 4.5" x 7", Fremont, Ohio, April 18, 1865. By the Mayor of Fremont, Homer Everett (1813-1887). Corner wear, creasing, soiling and discoloration. Overall, in very good condition.

In part: "Died. - In Washington, D.C., on Saturday, April 15th, at 7 o'clock and 22 minutes, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, aged 56 years, 2 months, and 3 days. I recommend and request, that as a manifestation of respect for the deceased, the people of Fremont observe Wednesday, April 19th, in accordance with the recommendation of the Acting Secretary of State...that the Church and other public bells of town be tolled...that all places of business be closed...and that the people repair at 12 M. to their respective places of worship and engage in religious ceremonies proper for the occasion."

After lying in state at the White House and Capitol, Lincoln's body was loaded onto a nine-car funeral train to begin the journey back to Springfield, Illinois. The route retraced Lincoln's 1861 journey to Washington, D.C. to take office as President. The train traveled 1,654 miles through seven states, making stops in principal cities and state capitals for processions, orations, and additional lyings in state, where over one million American citizens paid their respects.
