Zachary Taylor's Personally-Owned Emerald Green Glass Finger Bowl
Relic
A wonderful – and quite ironic! – relic from the home of Zachary Taylor: a personally-owned emerald green glass finger bowl with a surprisingly modern style. This handmade bowl measures 4.25" in diameter x 3.25" in height and is in fine condition.

Zachary Taylor's death at the relatively early age of 65 has often been blamed on the apocryphal story of his dying from eating a bowl of cherries and milk. Indeed, it may just have been so: Taylor contracted cholera, quite possibly transmitted by the milk he enjoyed with his cherries, served to him in a bowl like the one offered here!

This lovely bowl is accompanied by a copy of provenance in the form an antique business card from Jane Hughes Antiques of Dallas, Texas, with a note penned on verso reading: "These finger bowls were…personal property of Zachary Taylor and were used in his house in Baton Rouge, La. They were bought from a descendent of his: Miss Nannie Smith by W. N. Shill 1418 Delphyne St. B.R.L.".

Taylor had speculated on farmlands in northern Louisiana in the 1820s, eventually purchasing a 380-acre plantation in Feliciana Parish, near Baton Rouge. He sold it in 1849 upon his election.
Nannie Smith was the grand-niece of Zachary Taylor, and whose story is certainly worthy of further research.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) gained fame as a national hero for his service in the Mexican-American war. Although he didn't have clearly outlined political views, he was still elected as the 12th president of the United States, dying just sixteen months into his first term from March 1849 to July 1850.
