You must remember this! A chair from Rick's Café in "Casablanca"
Other
An original bamboo and wicker chair used at "Rick's Café Américain" in the 1943 Academy Award winning classic motion picture, "Casablanca" set in French Morocco's largest city, during World War II. The chair is constructed with a bamboo frame, wrapped with wicker and has a wood panel seat. Under the seat, stamped in black ink "Made in Belgium," further annotation on bottom handwritten in black grease pencil reads: "A 501-455," "BS 7442," and "WH." In overall very good condition, with some missing and loose wicker, primarily to the back rest, some loose nails, and expected age wear considering it is more than 80 years old. Measures 17.5" x 35" x 16"

Originally purchased by collector Jonathan Weedman in 1982 when Omega Cinema Props auctioned off its Hollywood artifact inventory. The chair remained in the buyer's collection until early 2014. The bamboo framed wicker chairs were in all scenes shot at Rick's Café Américain. It is impossible to pinpoint this chair's exact location in the film, but the film clip shown here depicts both Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman each seated in a bamboo framed wicker chair, perhaps this one?

Filming at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, began on May 25, 1942, and ended on August 3rd. Rushed into release after the Anglo-American invasion of French North Africa, November 8-16, 1942, its world premiere was held on November 26, 1942, in New York City. At some point after filming, most of the examples had a red wooden plank affixed to the seat (a frugal solution by the prop department; easier and cheaper than re-caning).
