Winston Churchill TLS Seeking a Return to Parliament Denies Being "anxious to re-enter any Council"
TLS
Typed letter signed "Winston S. Churchill" and addressed to Captain W. G. Bonaparte-Wyse. 1p, measuring 8" x 10", Westerham, Kent, dated August 30, 1924. Headed "Private" in Churchill's hand, he candidly discusses the upcoming General Election and denies feeling anxious about reentering Parliament. Expected letter creases, with minor age toning throughout. Otherwise, near fine.

Reading in full:

"I have received your letter of the 25th inst and in reply have to say that in my candidature for Westminster at the recent by-election, I stated specifically that I was in agreement with the policy set forth in the King's Speech of the late Government.
You should not, however, assume that I am 'anxious to re-enter' any Council. I am only anxious that the Constitutional and Imperial cause should be successful at the impending very serious General Election."

At the time this letter was written, Churchill was in the process of changing his political stripes. He had since defected from the Conservative Party for the Liberals in 1904, and as Home Secretary supported Lloyd George's creation of the British Welfare State. With the demise of the Liberals in 1922, Churchill found himself out of office. Indeed, he began running again as an "Independent Constitutionalist anti-Socialist", although his first two attempts at reelection were unsuccessful. Eventually in October 1924, he successfully ran for the seat for Epping and, upon the invitation of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin to become his Chancellor of the Exchequer, Churchill would return to the Tories.
