William Henry Harrison ANS Re: Land In Western Territories Signed 1 Month After Treaty of St. Louis
ANS
An autograph note signed by William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), then Governor of Indiana Territory and administrator of the District of Louisiana, and future 9th U.S. President, as: "There can be no advantage in keeping / the plots of the land that are in the office they / may be delivered to the owners - / Genl. Gebeen (?) / Willm. H. Harrison / 7th Decr. 1804." December 7, 1804. N.p. but probably St. Louis, then part of the District of Louisiana. Inscribed on a laid paper fragment. Docketed verso. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic. Expected wear including even toning, flattened paper folds, and chipped edges, else very good to near fine. The paper fragment measures 6.875" x 3.25" while the slab measures 9.5" x 4.5."

Harrison's note about "plots of land… in the office" may refer to paper records of land holdings, possibly plats.

Harrison had been appointed the first territorial governor of Indiana in 1801, and he served in this capacity until 1812. On October 1, 1804, Harrison became administrator of the District of Louisiana, a position he would hold until July 1805, when it became the Louisiana Territory and received its own governor. In early October 1804, Harrison left his home Grouseland near Vincennes to head to St. Louis, the district capital, to set up the new government of Louisiana. Harrison was still in St. Louis on November 3, 1804, when he negotiated the Treaty of St. Louis with five Meskwaki and Sauk chiefs. The treaty granted approximately 50 million acres of land in present day Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri, bordered by major rivers, in exchange for an undervalued lump sum and the promise of a small cash annuity. The land deal underscored Harrison's ambitions to obtain more and more land in the western territories so that white settlement would lead to statehood.
