War of 1812 Artillery Inventory Signed by 3 Important Officers: Winfield Scott, Nathaniel Towson & Patrick McDonogh
MDS
A 1p manuscript document signed by three prominent and important War of 1812 artillery officers: Winfield Scott (1786-1866) as "W. Scott / B Genl. Comg." at center; Nathaniel Towson (1784-1854) as "N Towson C US 2nd Art…" at upper right; and Patrick McDonogh (ca. 1786-1814) as "P. McDonogh / Lt. U.S. Art." at lower right. The inventory of ordinance supplies was checked and authorized by Winfield Scott in Buffalo, New York on May 31, 1814; and confirmed (with modifications) in Buffalo on June 1, 1814 by Patrick McDonogh. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, even toning, and isolated stains or edge darkening, else near fine. 7.875" x 9.75."

The document is entitled "Return for ammunition waggons & ordnance stores for two twelve pounders attached to a division of the 2d. U.S. Arty. commanded by Capt. Townson." It lists two ammunition wagons; 8 sets of harness; 4 saddles; 2 "Gunner's belts with implement, complete"; 2 powder horns; 2 portfire cases [chemically treated fuses used to ignite cannon]; 2 "prolonge ropes" [heavy ropes used to pull cannon]; 1 water bucket; 1 tar bucket; and 1 copper ladle. The inventory was submitted by Captain Towson for review by Winfield Scott, who had been promoted brigadier general just a few months earlier, in March 1814. The 28-year-old Scott's promotion made him the youngest general officer in the army at that time.

Although Winfield Scott is definitely the most famous of the trio, the other two artillery officers attached to the 2nd Artillery Regiment of the U.S. Army, Nathaniel Towson and Patrick McDonogh, should not be overlooked.

Nathaniel Towson, from Maryland, proved to be an outstanding artillery officer who commanded important artillery positions during many critical battles of the War of 1812 from 1813-1815. Towson's artillery bastions were fired so regularly during the Siege of Fort Erie that his position was nicknamed "Towson's Lighthouse."

Patrick McDonogh was born in Dublin and emigrated to Philadelphia in the early 1790s. He enlisted early and attained the rank of lieutenant. His tragic and untimely death during the Siege of Fort Erie is well-documented.

Just a few months later, both Scott and Towson would participate in the July 5, 1814 Battle of Chippawa and the July 25, 1814 Battle of Lundy's Lane. An excellent military document signed by Winfield Scott and two other War of 1812 heroes, dating from a period of time when Scott gained national prominence.
