Apollo 11

Three Apollo 11 Flown Film Artifacts, From the Dick Underwood Collection
Relic
Three superb, flown relics of the historic Apollo 11 flight, being unique film segments of Walter "Wally" Schirra's photography taken with his four Hasselblad 70mm cameras with a 250mm lens and five film magazines during the flight! These segments have been certified as part of the film magazines "Q," "R" and "S" by Dick Underwood, NASA Aerospace Technologist who personally collected the leaders and tails from each roll of Schirra's film after processing. The accuracy in identifying the mission the film was used in is due to Underwood's meticulous documentation of the missions and the film leader and tails that correspond. Film artifacts from several important missions were recently discovered after 50 years, and the condition varies with age and less-than-ideal preservation. Handsomely presented on a Certificate of Authenticity with fascinating information from The Right Stuff Space.

Schirra's film magazine "Q" includes images of Neil Armstrong on the lunar surface; magazine "R" - in color – was used to take photos inside the lunar module; while photos taken with magazine "S" also show images the lunar surface.

Underwood knew well the historical importance of photography during space flight as a means to document each pioneering mission, to record it, and to plan for the future. Perhaps in no case is this mission exemplified by the abortive Apollo 13 mission in which the service module – the improvised adaptation of the LiOH canister of the Lunar Module – was seriously damaged in an oxygen tank explosion that canceled the planned lunar landing. Analysis of photos from this, and every, mission would play in the planning and safety of future flights as well as allow the world to share in history-making events.

These scarce segments measure .75" - 1" x .5" approximately, and are comprised of special order Kodak Ektachrome film. One segment exhibits the perforated edge to facilitate the feeding of the film reel into the processing machine used to develop these rolls.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
