Striking James Baldwin Photograph Signed by Photographer Gordon Baer
Signed photo
A vintage photograph of important writer and Civil Rights advocate James Baldwin (1924-1987) taken by photographer Gordon Baer (1940-2019), who has signed and dated it as "© 1979 Gordon Baer" outside the image at lower right. The glossy black and white photograph depicts Baldwin, seated backwards in a chair at the head of one of his college classes at Bowling Green State University, clutching the sides of his head. The photograph was taken sometime during Baldwin's tenure as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Ethnic Studies at Bowling Green State University in 1979, in the year following his writer-in-residency there. Pencil-inscribed with several numbers verso. Expected light surface wear including isolated gently corner wrinkles, else near fine. 10" x 8."

James Baldwin made significant contributions to the field of literature in the form of poetry, plays, novels, and essays, many exploring the African American experience.
His most acclaimed work is his 1953 semi-autobiographical novel "Go Tell It On The Mountain," set in 1930s Harlem.

Gordon Baer served as a staff photographer for the "Cincinnati Post and Times Star" between 1966-1971 and as a freelance itinerant photograph whose work appeared in "National Geographic," "Time," "Life," and "Newsweek." His preferred subject matter was portraiture. Baer's photograph of Baldwin at Bowling Green State University is discussed in the recently published retrospective of Baer's professional career, ed. Robert A. Flischel, text by Mary McCarty, "Available Light: The Photographs of Gordon Baer" (RAF Press, 2021).
