Archive
A collection of six photographs of actress and model, Ruth Ford. Measuring between 7.5" x 8" to 8" x 10", dating from 1936 to 1947. All are black and white images by photographers George Platt Lynes, Carl Van Vechten, and Louise Dahl-Wolfe. Ford is captured as her character Roxane from "Cyrano de Bergerac", along with numerous studio portraits. All of the photographs bear handwritten captions on verso in an unknown hand. Light wear and bumping to the edges and corners. Minor soiling on verso. Very good overall.

Ruth Ford (1911-2009) was an American actress and model and a member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. Her brother was artist and writer Charles Henri Ford. In 1980, Ford, who was staying at The Dakota apartments, was the first to call 911 after hearing gunshots, which would turn out to be the shooting of John Lennon.

Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) was an American writer and artistic photographer. He became a patron of the Harlem Renaissance, having gained fame as a writer, and notoriety as well, for his 1926 novel "N***er Heaven". In his later years, he took up photography and took many portraits of notable figures such as Langston Hughes, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and more.

George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) was an American fashion and commercial photographer who worked in the 1930s and 1940s. A great many of his photographs featured gay artists and writers from the 1940s.

Louise Emma Augusta Dahl-Wolfe (1895-1989) was an American photographer, known primarily for her work for Harper's Bazaar, in association with fashion editor Diana Vreeland. At Harper's Bazaar she pioneered a new standard in color photography. Notable portraits by her include Vivien Leigh, Mae West, Orson Welles, and Josephine Baker.
