Bearing two hand-stamps, one recto and one verso, and a cancelled Austrian 35-cent Groschen stamp verso. Expected wear and light weathering. Minor handwriting impressions affecting the opposite side of the postcard. Else near fine. Not examined out of the frame. A Goodspeed's Book Shop, Inc. label dated October 5, 1976 is affixed to the frame verso. Isolated gilt loss to the frame. Sigmund Freud sent New Year's Day wishes to his close friend, the Austrian Jewish lay psychoanalyst Hanns (also Hans) Sachs (1881-1947). Freud ends his message with a cryptic note presumably commenting on the current state of the field of psychoanalysis. It appears that Freud disapproved of secondary resource material - or literature - being over-relied upon in lieu of actual psychoanalysis. According to Freud, such an imbalance left nothing exciting to be discovered in psychoanalysis. Freud's comments are definitely worthy of deeper research!

Freud would flee Vienna in early June 1938 following the German annexation of Austria in March 1938. He died in English exile less than two years after this New Year's Day greeting, in September 1939.

Hanns Sachs, a trained lawyer by profession, became one of the first and most influential lay Freudian psychoanalysts of the early-twentieth-century, practicing psychoanalysis without a medical degree after 1920. A zealous student of psychoanalysis, Sachs cofounded the applied psychoanalysis journal "Imago" in 1909. He befriended Freud around 1910 and became one of Freud's Secret Committee of Six, a group of psychoanalysts devoted to defending Freud's work and legacy, in 1912. Sachs left Europe around 1932 and served as a professor of psychoanalysis at Harvard Medical School. He lived at 168 Marlborough Street in the Boston Back Bay neighborhood where many American psychoanalysts reportedly lived during the period. Sachs's tribute to his mentor, "Freud, Master and Friend," was published in 1945.
