Description:

Richard M. Nixon
[New York, NY], July 6, 1980
Richard Nixon 2x Signed ALS to Conservative Pundit Wally George
ALS
A 1p autograph letter twice signed by former 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon (1913-1994), the first time as "Richard Nixon" at the conclusion of the letter, and the second time when writing out the name of his wife, as "Mrs. Nixon," in the text of the letter. July 6, 1980. [New York, New York.] Inscribed in blue ink on thick cream stationery. The letter shows expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, else near pristine. 7.25" x 10.5." Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope, the return address embossed as "Richard Nixon / 26 Federal Plaza / New York, New York 10278." Bearing a postmark and cancelled stamp; minor damage from letter-opening verso.

Former President Nixon addressed this note of congratulations to "Miss Annette DeSidero" and "Mr. Wally George" at Hollywood, California's KCOP television station. "Wally George" was the stage name of Walter George Pearch, Jr. (1931-2003). Known as "Mr. Conservative," "Mr. America," and "Mr. Combat TV," George was a conservative radio and television commentator who would launch his controversial Saturday late-night politically-focused talk show, "Hot Seat," in 1983. George's show anticipated the sensationalism of the "Jerry Springer Show" and often featured guests who yelled, walked off the set, or overturned furniture.

Richard Nixon wrote in full:

"July 6, 1980

Dear Wally + Annette,

While we will not be able to come to California for your celebration, Mrs. Nixon and I do want to take this opportunity to extend our best wishes to you both on this special day.

You deserve and I am sure will enjoy many good years ahead -

Sincerely

Richard Nixon."

The exact reason for Nixon's congratulations isn't clear, but context suggests some sort of professional success related to the television station, possibly a new contract. (While the language certainly implies an engagement or wedding announcement, it was likely not. Annette was not one of Wally George's six wives.)
