Description:

Queen Victoria of England
n.p., ca. 1876
Queen Victoria Signed Photo, In Striking Period Ebonized Frame
Signed photograph
A photograph of Queen Victoria I of England (1819-1901), signed by her outside the image along the bottom edge as "Victoria Rg [Regina] 1876." N.p. The vintage sepia-colored albumen photograph is matted and framed behind glass in a period Eastlake style ebonized frame decorated with gilt geometric patterns. The original portrait sitting of Victoria, showing her in her characteristic black bustled mourning dress and white veil, was taken by the photographic studio W. & D. Downey in 1872. The sight size of this photograph is approximately 3.875" x 5.5," which suggests that the photograph could be a cabinet card. Not examined out of the frame. Expected wear to the frame including isolated chips, crazing, and gilt loss. Else very good. The frame measures approximately 13.625" x 15.5" x 2."

1876 was a significant year in Victoria's reign, as she was granted the regnal title of Empress of India in May of that year. Victoria's signature thereafter became "Victoria Re I" [Regina Imperatrix]. We can therefore conclude that Victoria signed this photograph prior to her title and signature change.

Brothers William Downey (1829-1915) and Daniel Downey (1831-1881) operated a thriving photographic studio, W. & D. Downey, after 1855. The brothers were authorized "Queen's Photographers," enjoying exclusive royal patronage from the 1860s well into the Edwardian Age. Portrait sitters included Queen Victoria, Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales (and future Edward VII), Alexandra, Princess of Wales (and future queen), and Louise, the Princess Royal.
