Excerpts include:

• Houston, Texas, February 8, 1963: "I only wanted to help you as a segregatant [sic], to show the outside people where the morals of the negroes & what they do with proof that they are 80% dope heads & how they level to break down the morals of a white group of decent people, when they can & how they do it.
…If you ever want the true facts- on your state & how the dope & such goes through our state, just ask any bonified white officer of the merchant marines. It will raise your eye lids."

• Edison, Nebraska, March 14, 1965: "…the terrible thing that is on my mind, as well as millions of others, is the way that the Constitution of the U.S.A. is being kicked in the teeth.
There is no question in my mind about you and the good people of Alabama are doing everything possible to hold on to the Constitution… there are millions behind you all over the nation."

• Friendship, Indiana, March 15, 1965: "Many people here know that I have talked to you personally so there has been quite a number here in Indiana has put it in my lap to talk to you about a 3rd party and a name for the party & for the name of 'States Rights Party' is the most talked about…we want to have you run for President of the US on that party.
Gov. we have a great many good people in Indiana and the good people in every state is in hopes that we can get and have leaders for our country that will do something for our country and people and not for just what they will get and make out of a job."

• Indianapolis, Indiana, March 15, 1965: "We do not hate the negroes and believe in civil rights but not the superior rights that were granted to them by the passing of that law. The most disgusting thing to me is the interference of people from other states arousing trouble there. I know without a doubt for the most of them they have no knowledge of the true facts of the situation which exists in your state."

After being defeated in the 1958 race for Governor by staunch segregationist John Patterson, a once moderate-leaning Wallace decided that the only way he could win in Alabama was to adopt more radical views. With the help of KKK organizer Asa Carter, Wallace campaigned vehemently against the Civil Rights movement and racial integration, leading to his win in 1962. During his inaugural address on January 14, 1963, he would notoriously declare a vision of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever". Later in 1968, Wallace ran for President under the American Independent Party, campaigning in favor of segregation on the basis of "states' rights". The election year proved to be a tumultuous one, marked by the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, in addition to widespread opposition to the Vietnam War. Wallace would win in only five states, receiving 46 electoral votes.
