Mercury 7 Astronauts
Washington, D.C., ca. October/November 1963
Pair of Signed Photos with JFK, Original 7 at White House & Cape Canaveral
Signed photograph
A pair of astronaut signed photos picturing John F. Kennedy. The 8" x 10" black and white photographs document Kennedy's personal interest in one of his greatest legacies as President.

1.) John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson greet the Original Seven astronauts at the White House on October 10, 1963, presenting them with the Collier Trophy. Three of the seven: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, and Wally Schirra sign on the blank lower margin. Very minor wear. In near fine condition.

2.) A few weeks later, on November 16, 1963, President Kennedy visited Cape Canaveral. He is pictured with Wally Schirra, who signs the photograph in black felt tip above his image. Very minor wear. In near fine condition.

The Mercury Seven were the group of seven astronauts selected to fly spacecraft for Project Mercury. They are also referred to as the Original Seven and Astronaut Group 1. Their names were publicly announced by NASA on April 9, 1959: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven created a new profession in the United States, and established the image of the American astronaut for decades to come. All of the Mercury Seven eventually flew in space. They piloted the six spaceflights of the Mercury program that had an astronaut on board from May 1961 to May 1963, and members of the group flew on all of the NASA human spaceflight programs of the 20th century - Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle.
