Opie Otterstad's "True Red Sock": The Original Painting, Signed By The Artist
Art
A rarity: the original oil on canvas painting titled "True Red Sock" by sports artist Opie Otterstad, painted to commemorate the grit of pitcher Curt Shilling during Game 6 of the historic 2004 American League Championship Series. With bright colors and thickly laid paint, the painting gives unexpected drama to an otherwise typical moment in a ball game. It measures 17.5" x 16" (sight), matted in linen and set into a gilt-accented wide wood frame to dimensions of 28" x 27". Boldly signed "Opie" by Otterstad at lower left and in fine condition. Not examined out of frame. Otterstad's paintings are mostly seen in the $15,000+ range, making this offering most appealing indeed!

In the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankee, the Red Sox seemed destined for defeat, down 3 games to 0. However, with pitcher Curt Schilling's determination and performance through pain, the Sox made one of the most legendary comebacks in baseball history.

The Sox had won Games 4 and 5 of the ALCS and Schilling was scheduled to take the mound for Game 6. He had suffered a torn tendon in his right ankle during the first game of the American League Division Series against the Angels, and was barely able walk, much less pitch. Boston team doctor Bill Morgan decided to suture the ankle skin to the tissue surrounding the tendon to temporarily hold everything in place long enough for Schilling to pitch Game 6. This "quick fix" would become a groundbreaking medical procedure, creating an artificial sheath that prevented the tendon from snapping against the bone.

Even before the first inning of the game, blood started seeping from the sutures at Shilling's ankle, soaking into his white athletic socks. This result of a desperate medical measure became a symbol of the Shilling's courage, and turned his performance into an instant classic. Stitched up and bloody, Schilling nonetheless allowed only one run on four hits in seven innings, securing Boston's improbable victory with the win that is forever remembered as the "Bloody Sock" game.
Opie Otterstad (b. 1970) is a Major League Baseball-sanctioned artist known for his ability to paint the spirit of athletes and teams through his signature bold style. He holds an especial fondness for the city of Boston and, of course, the Red Sox.
