Description:

Franklin D. Roosevelt
Washington, D.C., March 27, 1945
One of FDR's Last Signatures, Appointment Signed on his Final Day in the White House
DS
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945). Partially Printed Document Signed, "Franklin D. Roosevelt", 1p, 22.75" x 19", Washington, March 27, 1945, his last day in the White House, appointing Charles R. Denny, Jr. as a commissioner to the Federal Communications Commission. Countersigned by Joseph C. Grew as Acting Secretary of State. Mounted to a board for framing, typical of these oversized commissions. Signs of previous framing include toning, remnants of adhesive, and mounting marks from matting. Glue remnants have been professionally removed, but staining is visible. Fortunately, the discoloration is in the blank margins of the document and most can be framed out.

Dated March 27, 1945, when it would have been filled in and the seal affixed. It was almost certainly signed the following day when FDR returned to the White House from Hyde Park, where he was resting from March 25th through March 28th. Roosevelt returned the morning of the 28th for one day of work and left that evening for Warm Springs, where he died exactly two weeks later. Denny's appointment was confirmed by the Senate on March 26th, and he was sworn in on the 30th.

Roosevelt signatures in his last term, especially the last months of his life, are highly uncommon and seldom found. This is a particularly nice example, since it would have been one of FDR's last signatures from the White House or Hyde Park. As a signature specimen it displays the cramped, smaller writing of his final months, but is steadier than some of his later, more frail signatures.
