Michel van Lochom, 17th C. Flemish "Engraver and Printer of the King," 70+ Engravings Re: 7 Deadly Sins, 7 Sacraments & Catholic Church
Engravings
A collection of exquisite seventeenth-century miniature engravings by Calvinist Flemish printmaker Michel van Lochom (1601-1647). The 72 plates, almost all of which are numbered, depict various Biblical scenes and allegories illustrating Roman Catholic Church dogma. Each plate shows a narrative scene--either oval, oblong, or arched in shape--above a caption in Latin and a translation into old French. Some of the plates are attributed to van Lochom along the bottom, similar to the following format: "A Paris / M. van Lochom, Graveur et Imprimeur du Roy pour les tailles douces." Expected wear including toning and isolated discoloration. The plates have been meticulously organized and housed in a red leather photo album. Each plate is hinged to a slightly larger stock card, and displayed in a floating mount. The series has been briefly described in English in a helpful "Guide to the Plates" by a former collector. The average size of each plate is about 3.125" x 4.75" while the binder measures 9.875" x 11.5" x 1.25." Accompanying the series is a small book cover fragment inscribed "Henry White / Close Lichfield / Trinity Sunday / May XXVIII / MDCCCXX."

The former collector's "Guide to the Plates" lists the English titles of van Lochom's engravings, which bear such titles as Plates 1-12, "Creed of the Catholic Church"; Plates 36-43, "The Seven Sacraments"; Plate 47, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven"; and Plate 62, "I was hungry and you gave me food."

Some other highlights include:

Plates 36-43, "Septem Peccata Capitalia / Les Sept Pechez Mortels." ["The Seven Deadly Sins."]

- Vanity, "Odibilis Coram Deo Est, Et Hominibus Superbia / La Superbe est hayé de Dieu, et des Hommes." ["The Superb is hated by God, and by Men."]

- Envy, "Non Efficiamur Invicem Invidentes / Ne nous envions pas les uns les autres." ["We do not envy each other."]

- Lust, "Fornicatores Et Adulteros Iudicabit Dominus / "Dieu jugera les Luxurieux." ["God will judge the Sensual."]

- Wrath, "Ne Sis Velox Ad Irascendum / Ne vous fasches pas aysement." ["Don't get easily angry."]

- Gluttony, "Attendite Vobis Ne Forte Graventur Cordavestra In Crapula, Et Ebrietate / Ne vous laisses point aller a la Gourmandise." ["Don't allow yourself to overindulge."]

- Greed, "Avaro Nihil Scelestius Est / Il ny a rien de si mechant qu'un Avariteux." ["There is no one so mean as a miser."

- Laziness, "Inutilem Servum Prohcite In Tenebras Exteriores / Jettes moy le paresseux dans les Enfers." ["Throw me, the lazy one, into Hell."]

Michel van Lochom (alternately spelled van Lochum or van Lochem) was trained by his father, also an engraver, and became a master engraver of the Antwerp branch of the Guild of St. Luke in 1621. He was in Paris after 1624, where he was granted the honorary title of royal "Engraver and Printer of the King for intaglios" ["Graveur et Imprimeur du Roy pour les tailles douces."] The artist operated an engraving shop on Rue St. Jacques à la Rose Blanche Couronnée (Saint James Street under the sign of a crowned white rose) in Paris until his death in 1647. Van Lochom's works can be found in the collections of the finest art museums in the world: the Rijksmuseum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Collection Trust, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
