Archive
Collection of five handwritten letters, all signed "Jno. Nicholson". Ranging in date from 1790-1795, measuring between 4.5" x 7.5" (smallest) & 7.75" x 9.25" (largest). Offers interesting details into the disgraced politician's business dealings and finances. Scattered damp staining, areas of paper loss, and uneven edges throughout; integral address leaves intact where applicable. Good to fair overall- boldly signed.

Excerpts include:

- April 10, 1790: "I have rec. a copy of the differences in the pensions of certain pensioners from a committee of Council this morning…"

- June 7, 1790: "I received the inclosed from Samuel Benezel Esq. respecting Sarah Scott, the wife of a pensioner as the subject comes before you I have inclosed you the letter."

- June 24, 1795: "I am one of a Committee of the Church of Arch Street who want to have one fence put up where it was before- I understand you are one of a committee who will not agree thereto-
What are your objections and what is the title that is opposed to us- if you have not the deed and will name them I will refer to them if on record."

John Nicholson (1757-1800) was the controller general of Pennsylvania, impeached on a charge of diverting state funds in 1793. Although acquitted in 1794, he resigned all state positions. Later, Nicholson entered into a series of unsuccessful speculative land ventures alongside Declaration Signer Robert Morris, which ultimately resulted in the two being sent to debtor's prison in 1799.
