Fine content autograph letter signed of James Monroe, one page, 7.25" X 9", New York, March 27, 1785, as delegate to the Congress of the Confederation to founding father John Francis Mercer. In very good condition. With PNA/DNA certificate.

Exhibiting his humorous side, the future President writes, in part: "…I have been very ill of a pleurisy & have only so far recover'd as to move about a little – this disease hath confined me several days to my bed & I believe the medic once thought my corporal part on its way to St. Paul's Churchyard – but I did not think so myself, & though affected very imminently with a pain & fever never was so sensible of illness…I find you are return'd to Annapolis. I hope you have your health for sickness is intollerable…I can give you no information of things in Congress, having been absent near a fortnight…".

Monroe was stricken with malaria while visiting mosquito-infested swampland along the Mississippi River in March, 1785. He would suffer sporadic flare-ups throughout his life, including during his Presidency in 1818.

John Francis Mercer (1759-1821) was Revolutionary War soldier, Colonel under the Marquis de Lafayette, and a Founding Father and Framer. He was also later elected to the House of Representatives and serving as Maryland's governor. Mercer also had the additional distinction of being Monroe's roommate at William & Mary, which he attended from 1774-1776!
