James K. Polk Rare 1844 Political Broadside Advertising a Torchlight Procession
Broadside
A political broadside announcing a torchlight procession for James K. Polk. Measuring 14.25" x 18.75", Lancaster, Pennsylvania, dated November 26, 1844. Matted to the overall size of 17" x 20". With flattened folds and creasing throughout. Some small holes at the folds. Edge chipping and tears which the matting easily covers. Light toning, soiling and foxing throughout. Some minor fading to the text, but still very attractive for display. This broadside previously sold at Heritage Auctions in 2007 for $3,100.

This broadside advertises and describes in detail a 19th century "Illumination and Procession, in Honor of the Glorious Victory Achieved in the Election of Jas. K. Polk…", which seemed to have been a fixture of political campaigns of the day. It announces: "Every Democrat is Respectfully invited to illuminate his dwelling, and also to join in the procession…It is earnestly hoped that every man will come provided with his transparency or lantern…A national salute of 26 guns will be fired at 12 o'clock M. of the day, which will be notice of our friends (should the day happen to be cloudy) that the celebration will proceed. If this salute is not fired they may take it for granted that the celebration is postponed…" Issued by Chief Marshall Frederick Hambright.
