In full:

"Dear Mr. Paul:

Your letter has been received.

I have autographed the enclosure and it is returned herewith.

When I was the Commander of the Ground Forces in Italy during a good bit of the war, I was always opposed by a top flight German Commander, from Rommel through Kesselring, and finally General von Vietinghoff. I was happy when each one was reassigned, but sure that his successor would be just as good. I expect Rommel was the best of them all but he commanded the troops in Northern Italy and Kesselring was the one who opposed me most of the war

General Mark W. Clark was a distinguished American military leader who played significant roles in both World War II and the Korean War. Born on May 1, 1896, in Madison Barracks, New York, Clark graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1917. During World War II, he commanded the Allied forces in the Italian Campaign, where he was instrumental in the capture of Rome in June 1944, making him the first Allied general to liberate a European capital from Nazi occupation. Known for his bold and sometimes controversial decisions, Clark's leadership extended into the Korean War, where he served as the Commander of United Nations forces from 1952 to 1953. After retiring from the Army in 1953, he continued to serve his country in various capacities, including as the president of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina.
