Description:

Ulysses S. Grant
City Point, Va, ca. 1864
Iconic U.S. Grant Battlefield Albumen by Mathew Brady at City Point During Siege of Petersburg Leading to Lee's Surrender

Albumen Photograph, measuring 5.25" x 8.25" taken late June or early July 1864, in City Point, Virginia by esteemed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. The image, providing a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment during the Siege of Petersburg, captures Union General Ulysses S. Grant and his staff seated in front of their field headquarters. Slightly toned with small manuscript notes below the images, some foxing, but a clear image. Mounted to an overall size of 9" x 11."

The present copy is part of a desirable set of Brady and Gardner images published by Taylor and Huntington in 1865.

In the photograph, General Grant, positioned third from the left, is surrounded by members of his staff at a strategic location at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers. Grant had recently established this location as his headquarters on the property of Dr. Richard Eppes, who was away working as a physician in the Confederate hospitals in Petersburg. Throughout the summer, Grant and his staff resided in tents, which were later replaced by wooden cabins as winter approached.

This photograph is a powerful visual documentation of the living conditions and strategic operations of Union officers and a poignant representation of General Grant's leadership during the concluding months of the Civil War from this essential logistical hub.
