Herbert Hoover PSA TLS 2 Weeks After 1920 Rep. Nat. Con. Defeat: "It has indeed been a great honor to have you feel that I am fitted for the great office of President"
TLS
A 1p typed letter signed by Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) as "Herbert Hoover" at lower right. [New York, New York.] June 26, 1920. On watermarked stationery with "American Relief Administration / Herbert Hoover, Chairman" letterhead. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds and a few extra wrinkles, including some touching the "er" of Hoover's signature. Even toning and isolated foxing, else near fine. 8" x 10.625." Accompanied by a PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity.

Hoover addressed this thank-you letter to Dr. John Duncan Spaeth (1868-1954), a Professor of English at Princeton University from 1905-1936. Evidently, Spaeth had sent his warm wishes and condolences to Hoover after the latter had withdrawn from the 1920 Republican Party National Convention at Chicago, Illinois just two weeks earlier, on June 12, 1920.

Hoover wrote in part:

"This is just a personal note to express in part my gratitude for the generous support which you have given me. It has indeed been a great honor to have you feel that I am fitted for the great office of President.

The question as to who wins in these contents is to me of less importance than that we keep faith in the great issues before us. We shall have years of great trial in the solution of most difficult questions and, although we have not had our own way as to the tools for their solution, we have no less obligation to stand vigorously for the right handling of these issues…"

Hoover gained a national profile through his outstanding stewardship of fundraising and relief efforts during the Wilson administration. Between 1917-1919, Hoover chaired the Commission for Relief in Belgium and the American Relief Administration, two organizations which mobilized food supplies for displaced war refugees. Hoover announced his presidential bid and became affiliated with the Republican Party in March 1920. He gained some traction during state primaries but his performance at the 1920 Republican Party National Convention was lackluster. Hoover would be elected 31st U.S. President in 1928.
