Dear, the daughter of Continental Congressman Ralph Izard, who was instrumental in the Revolutionary War. Transmittal folds, otherwise very good condition. With PSA/DNA certificate.

In part: "…I have looked into the volume which you did me the favor to send me, and find it full of interesting illustrations of Revolutionary events and occurrences, and a just tribute from you to the memory of your father. I sent the volume to a bookseller in Lexington, and requested him to examine it and order some copies of it…Mrs. Clay unites me in assurances of our friendly remembrance…".

At the time of this letter, Anne J. Dear had just published the first volume of the correspondence of her father, Hon. Ralph Izard of South Carolina. Izard (1742-1802) was a politician and a member of the Continental Congress in 1782-1783, then a senator from 1789-1795. During the Revolutionary War, he aided the Revolution by serving as Commissioner to the Court of Tuscany, seeking funds to build American war ships, and assisting in the negotiation of treaties with France.

Kentuckian Henry Clay (1777-1852), sometimes referred to as "The Great Pacifier," was an influential figure in early-to-mid-nineteenth-century American politics, best remembered for forging the Compromise of 1850. Initially trained as a lawyer, he served as a Kentucky Congressman and Senator and also as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was Secretary of State to John Quincy Adams, then returned to the Senate, where he served for a total of 16 years.
