An autograph letter signed by Henry Clay, concerning a pension for a "poor deaf boy". 1p, measuring 8" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., dated March 15, 1818. Signed "H. Clay" and addressed to an unknown recipient. With flattened mail folds and slightly rough edges. Toning throughout, darker at the edges. A few small spots of foxing. Boldly signed. Very good condition overall. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.

In full:
"I reply to your letter of yesterday. I regret to have to say that the Pension Committee, to which was referred the petition of the poor deaf boy, has made an unfavorable report. At my instance it was however laid upon the table & I propose making an effort, when the general subject of pensions is acted upon, to get the house to reverse that decision. If my feelings and judgment do not deceive me as to what those of others will & ought to be, I think that effort will be successful. Whatever may be the result we shall, at all events, have the consolation of not having failed in our duty."

At the time of writing, Clay was serving as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, a position he would hold from March 1815 to October 1820.
