[CONNECTICUT.] Jonathan Gilbert and Seth Gilbert, Autograph Document Signed, Account Book, 1755-1807, Farmington, Simsbury, and Berlin, Connecticut. 206 pp. + 22 pp. of interleaved loose documents (promissory notes, etc.), 8" x 12.5". Disbound; general toning throughout; some soiling and staining.

This account book was kept by Jonathan Gilbert from the 1750s into the 1770s and by his son Seth Gilbert from the late 1770s into the early nineteenth century as an account book to record their economic transactions with neighbors and others. Periodically, each man would compare accounts with specific individuals, and they would both sign and date a notice of the settlement.

After his father died in 1778, Seth Gilbert began using the book to record his own accounts, using blank portions of pages started by his father and additional pages further into the volume. Among other activities, Seth Gilbert carted materials for others and sometimes rented out his oxen or horses for others to use.

Although pounds, shillings, and pence were used throughout the American colonies before the Revolutionary War and even into the 1780s and 1790s, some of the latter entries reflect the change to dollars and cents in American currency.
