Dorothy Binney (1888-1982) was an American socialite and explorer. She first met George Putnam (1887-1950) in 1908 during her sophomore year of college, and the two married three years later on October 26, 1911. Together they had two sons, David Binney Putnam (1913–1992) and George P. Putnam, Jr. (1921-2013). The marriage was later rife with infidelity on both sides, and in 1929 the two finally separated. Many thought that George had left his first wife for Amelia Earhart, although for Binney, it was her own ticket out of an unhappy marriage.

Dorothy met and befriended Earhart through her husband, who was working as a project coordinator for her 1928 transatlantic flight. In May of that year, Dorothy and Amelia spent six days together in Boston in preparation, with the former becoming one of Earhart's financial supporters for the historic flight. Indeed, Earhart even stayed at a hotel using the name "Dorothy Binney" as a ruse to remain anonymous during this time. Later, in 1929, Dorothy filed for divorce against George, who soon set his sights on Amelia.

Putnam and Earhart made their relationship official shortly after his divorce was finalized, although they didn't marry until 1931. Amelia's views on marriage were notably liberal for the time, believing in equal responsibilities for both breadwinners. She pointedly decided to keep her own name rather than being referred to as "Mrs. Putnam". While the couple never had children of their own, Earhart was especially fond of David, who frequently visited his father at their family home. The boy shared Amelia's spirit for adventure, as seen in his expedition to the Galapagos Islands at age 12 and his own piloting of a stunt plane after being tutored by one of Earhart's advisors.
