Description:

Racist Civil War Broadside
Philadelphia, PA, ca. 1863
Giant 30" x 46" Rare Racist Civil War Era Anti-Democratic Broadside
Broadside
A large partial printed broadside, one page, 30" x 46", [Philadelphia], [n.d. but ca. 1863]. Folds, scattered foxing, slight loss to middle at top edge, marginal wear, significant archival tape repairs at fold tears and holes, and general fragility. Should be viewed in person.

This graphic broadside comprises the top half of a larger poster for National Union candidate Harry Bumm, running for the the position of city treasurer in Philadelphia, 1863. It offers quotes from a supposed letter to Jefferson Davis written by Bumm's opponent, John Brodhead, who was said to have Southern sympathies and favor slavery over a free working class. It also refers to the competition for jobs by free black labor in the North.

In part: "…Democratic Creed! Love for Civilization and Niggers! Worship of Southern Aristocracy! Sneer for Northern Mechanics! LETTER OF JOHN BRODHEAD Democratic Candidate of…".

The alleged letter of Brodhead to Davis is printed in other versions of this broadside, and reads as follows: "My dear sir:---Can you tell me if General Larman is likely to remain much longer in Nicaragua? I should like to go to that country and help open it to civilization and niggers. I could get strong recommendations from the president's present friends in Pennsylvania for the place, were the mission vacant, and I think I would prove a live minister. I am tired of being a white slave at the North, and long for a home in the sunny South. Please let me hear from you when you have leisure. Mrs. Brodhead joins me in sending kind remembrances to Mrs. Davis and yourself."
