Reading in full:
"I have directed Genl. W. R. Gause to report to you. He is an old Missouri Genl and have won distinction on the east side of the Miss river, and by a great pressure brought upon the Sec'y of War he was ordered to this Dept. When you see him I think you will be prepossessed in his favor. He has been brought up in a good school for discipline and will probably make the best Brigade commander you could find. In the reorganization of your Missouri Troops if you do not find a Missourian of higher rank or greater claims than Genl. Gause it will be well to assign him to the command of one of the infantry brigades. They should be commanded by officers from their own state."

General Edmund Kirby Smith (1824-1893) was a senior officer of the Confederate States Army who commanded the Trans-Mississippi Department from 1863 to 1865. On June 2, 1865, Smith surrendered his army at Galveston, Texas, the last general with a major field force. After the surrender, he fled to Mexico and then to Cuba to avoid arrest for treason. Smith eventually came back to the U.S. after his wife negotiated his safe return when the U.S. government offered amnesty to those who would take an oath of loyalty to the United States.
