Eugene O'Neill, Theodore Dreiser & Others Sign 1st Issue of "The American Spectator: A Literary Magazine"
Signed newspaper
The first issue (Vol. 1, No. 1) of "The American Spectator: A Literary Magazine" published in November 1932 boldly signed by six important 1930s literary figures involved in magazine production: magazine editor George Jean Nathan; co-editor Ernest Boyd; co-editor James Branch Cabell; co-editor Theodore Dreiser; co-editor Eugene O'Neill; and Richard R. Smith, president of The American Spectator, Inc., the publishing company. N.d., n.p. All six have signed the left side of the issue in between the lines of the masthead. The magazine is folded into quarters and still has its original blue wrapper advertising first issue magazine contributors and the price of 10 cents; the wrapper is faded. Expected wear including toning. A large horizontal split affects all of page 1/2 and part of page 3/4, and there is darkening along the fold. Else very good to near fine. Folded in quarters measures 8.75" x 11.25" while unfolded measures approximately 17.25" x 22.5." Ex-Liberty Historic Manuscripts. Ex-Collection of Steve Forbes.

Signers include, in alphabetical order:

"The American Spectator: A Literary Magazine" was a short-lived monthly newspaper with an edgy literary focus, recommending reading lists and identifying "worst book of the month" titles. The journal also treated controversial sociological and political subjects of the time, like sex, censorship, the rise of Nazism, birth control, alcohol consumption, the concept of a Jewish homeland, and the criminal justice system. "The American Spectator" was published between November 1932 and May 1937, with four of the original editors resigning in February 1935.
