Archive
Black and white photograph depicting the crew of the Enola Gay prior to leaving for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. 1p, measuring 8" x 10", n.p., undated. Boldly signed by five crewmembers: "Thomas H. Ferebee"; "Jacob Beser"; "George R. Caron"; "Richard H. Nelson"; & "Wyatt E. Duzenbury". Accompanied by two additional cards individually signed by navigator Theodore "Dutch" van Kirk and pilot Paul Tibbets, each measuring 2" x 3.5". Very minor flaws including slight bumping to corners. Otherwise fine condition- a fantastic grouping of signatures!

On August 6, 1945, the crew of the B-29 Superfortress Bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" over the southwestern Japanese metropolis of Hiroshima. Colonel Paul W. Tibbets would command the 12-man crew, also serving as the aircraft's pilot. The bomb's immediate aftermath wiped out 70 percent of the city and instantly killed 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. Jacob Beser, the Enola Gay's radar specialist, would also fly in the aircraft Bockscar during the United States' second mission to bomb Nagasaki three days later on August 9th. George Caron, the only defender and designated photographer out of the Enola Gay's twelve crewmen, became the first eyewitness to the bomb's deadly mushroom cloud.
