A dealer's lot of eight books signed by five U.S. Presidents: 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972); 36th U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973); 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon (1913-1994); 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter (born 1924); and 42nd U.S. President Bill Clinton (born 1946). Includes two stated first editions. Various dates, n.p. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall very good to near fine. The largest book measures 6.75" x 9.25" x 1.5" while the books stacked measure approximately 6.75" x 9.75" x 9.5."

The lot consists of, in order of presidency:

1.-2. First edition special presentation copies of Harry S. Truman, Vol. I, "Memoirs By Harry S. Truman: Year of Decisions"; and Vol. II, "Memoirs By Harry S. Truman: Years of Trial and Hope" (Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1955 & 1956). Both half title pages of Vol. I and Vol. II have been signed and inscribed by Truman as: "To David Battan / kind regards / from / Harry S Truman / 1-12-60" and "Best wishes to / David Battan / from Harry S Truman / 1-12-60." Both volumes are stated first edition on the copyright pages. The owner, David Battan, has signed one of the back loose endpapers of Vol. II. Expected wear consistent with age within including light toning and isolated discoloration. Some binding hinges are a little fragile. Else very good to near fine. Vol. 1 is 596pp and Vol. II is 594pp.

3. First edition, second printing special presentation copy of ed. James MacGregor Burns, "To Heal and to Build: The Programs of Lyndon B. Johnson" (New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1968). The half title page of the volume is affixed with a card bearing a gilt-embossed presidential seal, signed by Johnson as "Lyndon B. Johnson," and dedicated in another hand to I.W. Stormy Davis. Stated first edition second printing on the copyright page. The book comes with its original book jacket with flaps intact, the left one still listing its retail price of $8.95. Expected wear including minor shelf rubbing to the dust jacket, else near fine. 506pp.

The signed book was presented to Ira Winfield "Stormy" Davis (1905-1996), a telephone company executive who served as Johnson's industry representative during the latter's 1960 presidential campaign. Also accompanying the lot is a 1p retained transmittal cover addressed to Mrs. Juanita Roberts, President Johnson's secretary, dated October 30, 1968; as well as a 2pp secretarial manuscript letter drafting Davis's thanks for the very book. In part, "I am grateful too for a copy of the book 'To Heal and to Build.' I will read it with great interest and appreciation for the many, many things you have accomplished for the people of our country…"

4. A copy of Richard Nixon, "No More Vietnams" (New York: Arbor House, 1985), signed by the author as "Richard Nixon" on the full title page. A previous collector's embossed seal can be found in the lower right corner of the full title page. The book comes with its original book jacket with flaps intact, the left one still listing its retail price of $14.95. Nice and clean within. Isolated yellowing to the book jacket inner flaps, and some minor smudges to the covers, else near fine. 240pp.

5. A copy of Jimmy Carter, "Why Not the Best?" (Nashville, Tennessee: Broadman Press, 1975). A book plate signed by Carter as "Jimmy Carter" has been affixed to the half title page. The book comes with its original book jacket with flaps intact, the left one still listing its retail price of $5.00. Minor toning, else very clean within. Isolated shelf wear to the jacket including a small closed tear near the bottom headband, else near fine. 154pp.

6. A copy of Jimmy Carter, "Turning Point: A Candidate, a State, and a Nation Come of Age" (New York: Times Books, 1992), signed by the author as "J Carter" on the half title page. The book comes with its original book jacket with flaps intact, the left one still listing its retail price of $22.00, and bearing a sticker from Emory Bookstores. Isolated sunning/discoloration towards the top of the book jacket, else near fine. 223pp.

7. A copy of Jimmy Carter, "Always a Reckoning and Other Poems" (New York: Random House Times Books, 1995), signed by the author as "J Carter" on the front loose endpaper. Carter's poems are accompanied by illustrations by Sarah Elizabeth Chuldenko. The book comes with its original book jacket with flaps intact, the left one still listing its retail price of $18.00. A few scuffs on the front cover of the book jacket, else near fine. 131pp.

8. A copy of Bill Clinton, "Giving: How Each of Us Can Change The World" (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2007), signed and dedicated by the author as "To Mike / Bill Clinton" on the half title page. The book comes with its original book jacket with flaps intact, the left one still listing its retail price of $24.95. Expected light wear to the book jacket, else near fine. 240pp.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
