Addressed to unknown recipient, possibly his half-brother, Henry St. George Tucker Sr.: "I am writing to you on the only half sheet of paper that I could find after rummaging my drawers &c: which you may remember are generally in a state of 'confusion worse confounded.' Our family in all its branches are the greatest consumers of paper…I almost begin to think that you have done well in setting yourself in a town where you can always call in the aid of society to your relief: but I never shall think you have down wisely in carrying on your profession in a manner so laborious as to deprive you of the will & capacity to employ your mind on any other subject. Were I to judge from your letters to me for some time post I should indeed think with you that your pen was worn out…I who know you, can easily discern that you write with a body exhausted & a head clouded & disturbed by the intolerable details of a profession, degraded to a trade, by the manner in which it is practiced in Virginia…My love to Evelina & the brats…"
