Civil War Albumen of the Fredericksburg Battlefield
TImothy, O'Sullivan
Battle of Fredericksburg Albumen by History-Making Photographer Timothy O'Sullivan
Photograph
A fine albumen by pioneering Civil War photographer Timothy O'Sullivan, measuring 9.25" x 6.75" (sight), Fredericksburg, Maryland, n.d. but 1863. Matted in cream to overall dimensions of 19.5" x 16". Photo exhibits light wrinkling and wear; mat is a bit warped but easily flattened and framed. Not examined out of mat.

This fine image shows the field of battle at Fredericksburg, with soldiers manning cannon, ready to fire. A vintage tag accompanying the photo states that it was taken in June 1863 and depicts Battery "D" Second U.S. Artillery.

Photographed by prominent American photographer Timothy H. O'Sullivan (ca. 1840-1882), known for his depictions of the Civil War and the Western United States -- and particularly remembered for his chilling image "A Harvest of Death," showing the dead on the Battle of Gettysburg field.

The Second U.S. Artillery was raised on March 21, 1861, with Battery "D" being a light battery which participated in First Bull Run, the capture of West Point, Gaines' Mill, Glendale, and Malvern Hill. In the Maryland campaign it was engaged at Burkittsville and Antietam as well as Fredericksburg and Salem Church. During the fall of 1863 it was actively employed with the cavalry and saw in action at Raccoon Ford and Robinson River, Morton's Ford and Blue Mill's Landing, and Muddy Run. In 1864, the battery was engaged at Todd's Tavern, participated in Sheridan's raids, Yellow Tavern, Matadequin Creek, and Trevilian Station, later seeing action in the Valley with Philip Sheridan, at Milford and Luray.
