Apollo Lunar Module Triangular Bulkhead Window w/ Engraved Landing Point Designator
Other
An interior Lunar Module window used on the Apollo spacecraft. Measuring approximately 24" across the bottom and 22" on the upper sides of the triangle. Featuring the Landing Point Designator (LPD) engraved in degrees on the window's surface to show the commander the landing point targeted by the computer. Its edges have been coated with a black substance and is wrapped in protective fabric with an outer layer of plastic. Included are copies of a pair of two detailed blueprints, each measuring approximately 33" x 22". Light wear and surface perfections throughout, else very good.

**This piece requires 3rd party shipping**

This appears to be the left window as seen from inside the cockpit, i.e. the window that the commander would be looking through as he brings the LM into land on the Lunar surface. Based on the date of manufacture, this example is one of the later windows produced.

Two labels from Corning Glass Works, Corning, NY are attached to the outside fabric. The first reads: "Glass, Monolithic, Transparent, High Strength, Chemically Tempered. Grumman Specification No. LSM-14-4401, Manufacturer's Part No. 586423, Manufacturer's Lot No. 9047, Date of Manufacture 3/31/70, Type I, Serial No.116." The second reads: "LEM Part, Glass – Handle with Care, Do Not Touch Surfaces".

The Apollo Lunar Module was designed as the first spacecraft to operate exclusively in space. With the world watching, the LM carried two astronauts to the surface of the moon on six Apollo missions and served as a lifeboat on Apollo 13. It was initially tested on Apollo 9, and few on Apollo 10 to within 9 miles of the Lunar surface.

Grumman Aerospace Corp. and NASA began work on the design of the LM in early 1963. Over the course of 6 years, the LM was designed, refined, built and all components and the completed ships tested. The first LM flew on Apollo 9 in Earth orbit.

As the design of the LM evolved, so did its window design. The triangular design was adopted as manufacturing processes and weight reduction practices were developed. The window corners are notably rounded to reduce stress loading on the pressurized structure. Each window opening actually has 2 panes, an interior window with engraving and the outer window providing micrometeoroid and radiation protection. These windows provide the necessary visibility during the Lunar decent and landing.

This lot comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
