Andrew Jackson Free Frank to Col. Samuel Swartwout- All in His Hand!
Free Frank
An envelope, hand addressed by President Andrew Jackson to Colonel Samuel Swartwout, likely when he was serving as Collector of the Port of New York. 1p, measuring 5.25" x 3.5", undated, [Washington, D.C.]. In full, all in the President's hand: "Free/ Andrew Jackson/ Colo. Saml. Swartwout/ New York/ Mail". Features expected weathering, including uneven age toning, creasing, and tearing throughout. An otherwise fine example.

Samuel Swartwout (1783-1856) was an American soldier, merchant, speculator, and politician. He is perhaps most known for his role in the Swartwout-Hoyt scandal, in which he was alleged to have embezzled $1,222,705.09 during his tenure as Collector of the Port of New York.

Swartwout's close association with Andrew Jackson, and his support of the President in the election of 1828, led to his appointment to the position on April 25, 1829. The role of Collector had great importance, as the Port of New York served as one of the largest sources of income for the U.S. government. Despite opposition from Secretary of State Martin Van Buren, Swartwout was later re-appointed for another term of four years, ending on March 29, 1838. By the end of his tenure, he and his subordinates were implicated in large embezzlement scheme, leading to Swartwout's eventual forfeit of personal property as a means of repayment to the federal government in 1841.
