Amnesty Oath Archive (3) for Nottoway Co., Virginia Resident Providing Forage
Archive
A small archive relating to an amnesty oath and protection provided for Paschal J. Fowlkes of Nottoway County, Virginia. Includes two letters and the signed amnesty oath. The two letters concern foraging parties visiting Fowlkes' plantation, dated April 10 and 17, 1865. The Oath of Amnesty was produced on May 17, 1865 and signed by Captain G. W. Smith as Provost Marshal. All have flattened mail folds, with a few small separations and loss in places. Varying degrees of toning, staining, and ink spots. Boldly signed. Very good overall.

Includes:
1. Major William H. Joyce Letter. April 10, 1865, Burkeville, Virginia. Reading: "I have the honor to state that I visited Mr. Fowlkes Plantation with a foraging party on the 9th inst. and that he willingly threw open his Store Houses and afforded me every facility for collecting forage and loading my Teams. I would respectfully suggest to the Commanding Officer of any foraging party, that may visit his place in future that in my opinion all has been collected on his farm that can be without submitting his family to absolute suffering."
2. George W. Macy Letter, By Command of General George Meade. April 17, 1865, HQ Army of the Potomac. Reading: "The bearer P.J. Fowlkes, living near Burkesville, is hereby furnished protection for such corn, provisions & as is necessary for the sustenance of his family. Foraging parties, no matter by whose order employed, will respect this protection."
3. Oath of Amnesty. May 17, 1865, HQ Army of the Potomac. Marshal Captain G. W. Smith certifies that Paschal J. Fowlkes has taken the amnesty oath.
